Shoes…shoes..everywhere!

The humble shoe has come a long way from the early ages where it served the purpose of protecting human feet. It still serves as a protection for feet, but it’s humble no more!. It is revered by humans and animals alike. Yes, the other day I saw a Pomeranian strutting about in 2 pairs of expensive shoes. Judging from the superior expression on his jowls, it seemed to be quite disdainful of my own pair. May your shoes get chewed on by your own nephews pommie!

Shoes these days come in all shapes and sizes and are used for all sorts of things. There are beautiful poems dedicated to shoes. Apparently, even the devil seems to prefer a particular brand of shoe. What I’m intrigued by is the number of other uses a shoe can have.

For example, they are used extensively by truck-owners to ward away evil-eye. I once saw a shoe hanging at the rear of a truck with an accompanying tagline that declared “Buri nazar waale, mera joota tere sar mein” (You, with an evil-eye let my shoe land on your head).
I have seen someone grow cactus in a pair of shoes. . (Now wouldn’t that be a perfect gift for your ex?)

In our country, a shoe plays a crucial role during public protests that involve burning effigies. A jooton ki maalaa (shoe-necklace) comes very handy in such situations.
(In fact, this particular use can single-handedly save major shoe brands during a downturn).

I myself have used shoes in several novel ways. I have used them a door-stoppers after doors have slammed shut onto my face. These door-stoppers have a habit of taking a vacation when you need them most. They (the shoes, not door-stoppers) have doubled up as pockets for long marathons. Which reminds me, they have also been used for bringing many-a-friend back to senses after they passed out in 'similar' events. (Yeah, we dont carry smelling-salts in our purses, do we?).

However, the most innovative use of a shoe is recently being seen in our very own elections. That of getting your voice heard among a million others. What a way to get an unspoken message across! Perfect.
